Boiler Engineer Jobs

Boiler Engineer Overview

Boiler Engineer jobs involve more than just maintaining and repairing boiler systems. Boiler Engineers assist industrial and commercial facilities in the operation of boilers, engines and other auxiliary equipment. Requiring a thorough knowledge of gauge, chart and meter readings to track the boiler's functionality, these engineers work on steam, power and other systems including turbines, compressors, pumps, generators and refrigeration equipment. From replacing defective valves to overhauling complete systems, Boiler Engineers who work at around-the-clock facilities work full-time hours in rotating shifts. Others who work at hospitals or in other industries that operate all year long may be required to work holidays and weekends to maintain equipment.

Boiler Engineer Education Requirements

A high school diploma is mandatory for obtaining a position as a Boiler Engineer, and many employers require candidates to have passed science, math, technical and mechanical subjects. Most companies demand boiler engineers to demonstrate a thorough competency by earning the proper licenses or passing company-specific examinations. Engineers can also enter into accredited apprenticeship programs to obtain the required on-the-job training, which can take up to four years to complete. Because of the continuing advancements in boiler operations, Boiler Engineers who wish to advance in this field of expertise should take the relevant courses at a vocational or technical institute. Upon graduation or completion of an apprenticeship program, candidates who wish to ascertain a higher salary can earn three levels of licensure: Third Grade License, Second Grade License and First Grade License.
