The field of Technology Services Management, sometimes known as Information Technology Services Management, continues to grow at a rapid rate. As companies adopt new technologies, such as mobile-based platforms, the need for Technology Services Managers will continue to grow.

Generally, a Technical Services Manager is responsible for the oversight of employees, projects and operations in the IT department. Responsibilities for this position include establishing and maintaining technical and operational processes, supervising teams and employees, managing inventory and assets, and researching and evaluating solutions to solve an organization’s technical challenges. Technical Services Managers may be responsible for departmental purchases and budgeting, employee scheduling and other operational tasks as well.

Educational requirements for Technical Services Manager jobs can range from a bachelor's degree with experience as a hands-on technician to an advanced degree in the computer sciences, health sciences, business management, engineering or another professional field. Additionally, professional certifications, like the PMP, demonstrate that a manager possesses the skills to oversee enterprise-level projects. Technical certifications may also be required for the Technical Services Manager position.

Skill requirements include effective verbal and writing skills, excellent interpersonal skills, supervisory and management skills, and a willingness to work long hours. These managers often supervise programmers and systems engineers. Therefore, a technical background is beneficial. Individuals with previous management experience in IT teams are generally sought out for these positions.
