Manufacturer’s Representative Overview
A manufacturer’s representative is an important figure in many companies, and these positions may be found in smaller companies as well as in Fortune 500 companies. These individuals are generally required to be self-motivated, driven professionals who actively promote the products that the company manufacturers. These professionals should have a keen understanding of the products that the company manufacturers as well as the benefits and niche market for the products. They may sell or promote products to other businesses and stores, and the goal of these professionals is to drive sales. Other related positions that these professionals may work under include field service representative and sales representative.
Manufacturer’s Representative Education Requirements
The educational background or requirements for a professional applying for a manufacturer’s representative position may vary considerably based on the employer as well as on the type of goods that the representative will be promoting or selling. For example, a manufacturer’s representative for a technology manufacturing firm may be required to have a four-year degree in information technology, engineering or a related field. Other positions may require a business degree. In some cases, a two-year degree or related experience may suffice. These professionals generally may need to have sales experience in a business to consumer or business-to-business realm.
Manufacturer’s Representative Job Market
The job market for a manufacturer’s representative is closely linked to the state of the manufacturing industry as a whole. However, it is important to note that sales positions are generally not reduced during a sluggish economy because these are the positions that drive company profits. The manufacturing industry, however, is expected to expand in the coming years as the economy continues to recover. Because of this, a greater number of positions for sales associates and manufacturer’s representatives may be created. These may be found in manufacturing companies in many sectors, and they may be found in regions across the country.
Manufacturer’s Representative Salary
A manufacturer’s representative position may receive a flat salary, or the professional may receive a base salary with bonus potential based on performance. The compensation, therefore, can vary. These professionals commonly earn between $18,000 and $60,000 or more per year.
