Reporting to a board of directors, vice presidents generally direct or oversee the company's budgetary and financial activities, consulting with the board members, staff, and other executives about the general operations. These chief executives approve and negotiate contracts by analyzing the financial statements, performance indicators, and sales reports, identify policies to cut or improve and appoint departmental managers. With an intense pressure to succeed, vice presidents often have numerous staff on hand to assist with the completion of daily tasks. Individuals who enter this industry need to be prepared to work long hours, including weekends and evenings. These chief executives often need prior experience in manufacturing and production management or in a similar role, such as a vice president of business development.
