Manufacturing and Production Management Jobs

Manufacturing and Production Management Overview

Playing an essential role in production efficiency, manufacturing and production managers oversee the daily activities of manufacturing plants. Managers in this industry coordinate, direct, and plan activities to manufacture goods such as computer equipment, cars, and paper products. When it comes to meeting production goals and delegating workers, manufacturing managers should have exceptional organizational and communication skills to ensure production remains within budget and on schedule. Individuals need to be able to write production reports, analyze production data, and create solutions for efficient operations. They will also fix any production challenges that arise throughout the project.
Depending on the manufacturing plant, production managers will oversee a specific sector or the entire plant. Individuals in this career should expect to work full-time hours, with the potential of working overtime. These professionals may also find employment opportunities as an operations director, production supervisor, or director of quality improvement.

Manufacturing and Production Management Education Requirements

In order to be able to effectively manufacture products in accordance to quality, cost, and quantity, individuals need to earn a bachelor's degree in business administration and management or in a related field. They also need a minimum of five years of relevant work experience. Production managers should be knowledgeable in various technologies, including calendar and scheduling software, enterprise resource planning software, and human resource software. Students learn about project management, operations planning and scheduling, auditing and controls, and organizational planning and decision-making, which will prepare them for managing employees and solving problems. Even though certification is not required to become a production manager, most companies prefer hiring those who have shown a higher level of competency. Individuals who wish for career advancement should earn their Certified in Production and Inventory Management credential through the Association for Operations Management.
