Media Job Overview

Media jobs run the gamut when it comes to skill sets. From buyers to strategists, content is no longer just words and today's marketers must be comfortable executing all forms of media. Digital media and social media specialist jobs are among some of the hottest around, but there are media-related jobs for every skill set.

People choosing a job in media and marketing must be skilled communicators. Top-notch writing, video, or presentation skills are necessary in this competitive field. Connecting concepts to people and telling brand stories that persuade and entice are among the basic job requirements. Some of the most popular job titles in this broad field are:

  • Director, Media and Social Media

  • Media Job Education Requirements

    While most people working in the various forms of media and marketing hold a bachelor's degree — especially those wanting to move into management — some specific media specialists (like photographers and video production assistants) only hold a two-year or high school degree. A small percentage of people working in the field hold a master's degree. Master's are more common among director and higher levels.

    Since good communications skills are key to success in this position, many graduates of liberal arts schools find themselves working in marketing and digital media.

    Because of the constant changes in this industry — due to technology and social media — much of the training is independent learning that occurs outside of the classroom. Today's marketers and media specialists are learning the tools of the trade as they go. A successful job candidate will continue to do this on his/her own and not expect an employer to provide it. While people working in media jobs generally work in offices during the typical daytime hours, it's not unusual to monitor social media accounts during evenings and weekends. Today's marketer is ever vigilant over the brand and always learning.

    Media Job Market

    Media professionals can work directly for companies or in an agency capacity, working with many clients. The job market is strong, and expanding as the coordination of different forms of media grows. The market is expected to grow by 12 percent over the next 20 years.

    People in media careers generally branch off and specialize in earned media or paid media. Earned media is word-of-mouth marketing using tools such as social media. Paid media specialists work with paid forms of marketing such as advertising and product placement.

    Media Job Salary Information

    Salaries are based on experience, area of expertise, and responsibilities. Media professionals can expect to make $50,000-$75,000 a year as a mid-range. Directors in major metropolitan areas bring in six-figure incomes.
