Part-time Summer Jobs Overview

Many people seek some form of part-time summer employment at one time or another. Part-time summer job seekers can typically find positions in the sales, retail or education industries. More than 40 percent of those looking for summer jobs search for hospitality and leisure positions. Such jobs typically run for a period of several months. Most start at the beginning of summer and conclude at the end of August or the beginning of September.

Part-time Summer Jobs Education Requirements

There is a difference between a summer job and a summer internship. An internship lets currently enrolled college and high school students work in a field that relates to their future careers. Most schools award those students course credit when they complete paperwork or documentation that shows what they did over the summer. The most common industries for teenagers and younger workers include food services, retail, recreation and construction. Some positions require that applicants have a high school degree, but there are some jobs open to current high school students.

Part-time Summer Jobs Market

More than half of all students and those under the age of 24 currently have a job or work part time over the summer months. The number of part-time workers increased by more than two million from 2012 to 2013, and it seems that this trend will continue. The number of summer jobs increases each year to compensate for the number of people traveling during those months.

Part-time Summer Jobs Salary

The salary of a part-time job ranges depending on the industry and the level of experience of the applicant. Not all summer internships come with a set salary, but those that do pay an average rate between $13 an hour and nearly $40 an hour. Some companies also give students a stipend or a set wage for the work they do over the summer, which can range from $2,000 to $3,000. Part-time summer jobs for high school students and workers with less experience usually pay minimum wage.
