Part Time Teen Jobs Overview

Teens seeking employment often think of fast food restaurants, and though these establishments are good choices, other options exist. Part-time job opportunities are varied and include cashiers, servers, clerks, merchandise stockers, housekeepers and personal-care aides. No matter what part-time job an ambitious teen chooses, it will offer strategic skills and experience valuable in future employment.

Part Time Teen Jobs Education Requirements

Teens who have not yet earned a high-school diploma qualify for many part-time jobs. Employers seek candidates with an ability work as a team, reasoning skills and strong communication capabilities. A proficiency in math may be required for cashiers and clerks.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required for some part-time jobs. Additional courses and experience may lead to advanced positions such as shift managers or team leaders.

Part Time Teen Job Market

For people who choose part-time work for non-economic reasons, such as teens who must fit work into a busy academic or extra-curricular activities schedule, the trend in part-time employment has remained fairly steady with only a slight increase or decrease in employment levels each month according to recent statistics. One part-time area that offers experience necessary for a multitude of occupations is the childcare field. Future pediatricians, nurses, social workers, human resources and teachers are some of the occupations that benefit from the skills attained during part-time work in childcare. Childcare occupations that hold a bright outlook thanks to increased availability are part-time babysitter or nanny jobs as well as full-time summer nanny jobs.

Part Time Teen Jobs Salary

The starting salary for about 20 percent of the Part Time Teen Jobs is at or below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour according to recent studies. Not all occupations fall into that category according to statistics. Childcare workers average $9.38 per hour and $8.84 is listed as the median wage for fast food servers.
