Child Care Jobs
Child Care Overview
Child Care workers are responsible for providing nurturing and safe care of children while parents work or take care of other responsibilities. Most children who require care are between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years. However, Child Care workers also provide before- and after-school care for children ages 6 and older. Child Care Providers for younger children generally offer more direct care such as feeding, changing diapers and assisting with toilet training. They also engage young children in playful activities that promote healthy development. They are also responsible for planning learning activities that help children learn kindergarten readiness skills such as basic reading and writing.
Child Care Education Requirements
The education that a Child Care worker needs to obtain employment depends upon the work setting and the responsibilities. Some centers hire entry-level workers with a high school diploma and allow them to gain skills by working with experienced teachers. Others require a certificate or two-year degree beyond a high school diploma. There are also centers that require Child Care workers to hold a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Child Care workers with bachelor’s degrees or higher usually work as Educational Program Counselors in private centers or as Education Administrators at a preschool or child care center. Those with a high school diploma are usually required to enroll in workshops and continuing education courses that teach the basic skills to care for children. Due to a national move toward better quality child care, in most states, workers without recognized credentials are required to begin work toward a certificate or degree. Child care workers who earn two- or four-year degrees must also take courses that teach good oral and written communication skills.
Child Care Job Market
Job growth in the Child Care industry is expected to match the national average of all occupations. The demand for Child Care services will increase as populations grow. By 2022, the number of available jobs in the field is expected to grow by 14 percent, resulting in approximately 184,000 new jobs.
Child Care Salary
According to recent statistics, Child Care workers earn an average of $9.38 an hour. Directors with bachelor’s degrees can earn more than $21.00 per hour.
