Production Food Technologist Overview


Because production food technologists play a vital role in the expansion and maintenance of food supplies, most work in the research and development sector. Having a strong educational background in science, production technologists utilize their knowledge and expertise not only to improve and create food products for the enjoyment of consumers but also to research food safety, storage, quality, packaging, preservation, distribution, and processing. Depending on the company, production food technologists also study soil composition to see how it relates to proper plant growth, communicating their research findings to food producers, the scientific community and the public. With additional employment opportunities available in the agricultural and the food service industries, technologists need to be willing to travel between facilities and oversee new project implementation.

Production Food Technologist Education Requirements


Production food technologists need to undergo a certain amount of formal education, with most employers preferring a bachelor's degree in general agriculture, food technology and processing, international agriculture or a related field. Undergraduate coursework may cover various subjects such as food chemistry, food microbiology, food analysis, and food engineering. Even though certification is not required, food technologists can increase their chances of career advancement by attaining a certificate through organizations like the Institute of Food Technologists, American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, or Soil Science Society of America, which recognizes their expertise in food and agricultural science. Most employers hire food technologists who have learned how to communicate effectively, analyze data, make important decisions, grasp mathematical concepts, and conduct experiments.
