Project Management Contract Jobs

Project Management Contractor Overview

The role of an IT project management professional is to facilitate and lead a project, and these projects may be large and complicated. Often, the manager may lead numerous people from inside and outside the company, direct meetings and take other steps to ensure that the project is completed on budget and before a specified deadline. A project management contractor is a non-salaried individual who may be brought into the company to work on a specific project. The length of time that the contractor will work for the company is generally based on the scope of the project. These professionals may also work in job positions such as IT contract lead, systems upgrade manager and others.

Project Management Contractor Education Requirements

A project management contractor may be contracted to work for a company based on prior projects he or she has completed as well as specific technical expertise or other skills or experiences. Generally, these professionals are required to have a Bachelor’s degree in a technology field, but some companies may accept prior work experience in lieu of a degree. In some cases, advanced technical certifications or post-graduate education may be required. Many companies will inquire about the type work experiences the candidate has had or the projects that he or she has successfully completed as part of the selection process.

Project Management Contractor Job Market

Between 2012 and 2022, the information technology sector as a whole is projected to increase by 25 percent, and both salaried and contractor jobs will be created. Contractor jobs are preferred among employees when on-going IT projects are not planned because they may be more cost-effective for employees. While contract work is expected to increase in the next decade, those who work as IT project management contractors may also make the transition to salaried positions easily if they are unable to find contract work.

Project Management Contractor Salary

In many cases, salaried positions receive a lower rate of pay, but they also qualify for benefits packages that can be lucrative. Contractor positions, on the other hand, may only qualify for base compensation, and because of this, the rate of pay is often significantly higher. The median salary for a salaried project management position is $120,000, and contractors may earn significantly more than this. In addition, short-term contracts often have a higher rate of pay than long-term contracts.
