Project Manager Contract Jobs
Project Manager Contractor Overview
IT project managers generally are required to bring challenging, complicated projects to fruition. To accomplish the major goal of completing a project, the manager may need to bring together human resources from inside the company and from vendors or third party firms. The manager may also be required to complete a project on time and on budget. In some companies, these positions are salaried, but there are also contract positions available for IT project managers. Many IT project manager contractors will work on a long-term contract basis, but the length of the contract may be dependent on the type of project that the contractor is tasked with or responsible for completing. These professionals may work as IT project managers, senior IT project managers and other roles.
Project Manager Contractor Education Requirements
The education requirements for a project manager contractor are often similar to those for a salaried IT project manager. The successful candidate may be required to have at least a four-year degree in information technology or in a related field, and some contractor positions require the candidate to hold special certifications proving proficiency in certain areas. A post-graduate degree or some level of post-graduate education may also be required for some positions. In addition, the candidate may be required to demonstrate or prove successful completion of projects by providing references for past work experiences.
Project Manager Contractor Job Market
Significant growth in the information technology sector is projected between 2012 and 2022. In fact, during this time period, a 25 percent rate of growth is expected, making this one of the fastest growing sectors. Contractor positions are often viewed by employers as being cost-effective, and they may be ideal when on-going IT projects are not projected for the company’s future plans. Because of this, growth for contractor positions for IT project management is expected to be high.
Project Manager Contractor Compensation
For salaried IT project managers, the median salary is approximately $120,000. However, these professionals also receive benefits packages in many cases. Contractors generally will earn a higher rate of compensation in lieu of benefits. The actual compensation that a contractor may earn may be dependent on the length of the contract, the type of project and the experience or skill level of the contractor.
