Compliance and ethics officers are responsible for ensuring that a company has all necessary licenses and permits. They ensure compliance with all applicable government regulations and laws. Internal policies, created specifically by the company or industry, are also managed and enforced. These professionals conduct periodic inspections to ensure both employees and management are following proper procedures. They are responsible for identifying potential risks and recommending corrective actions to prevent problems before they occur. Predominantly, jobs in this field are in the financial sector, but compliance officers also play a role in the healthcare, energy and telecommunications industries, as well as in state and federal governments. Potential positions include ethics and compliance specialists, compliance directors, analysts, and for professionals with a law background, compliance counsel attorneys.
Compliance and Ethics Education Requirements
Generally, compliance and ethics officers have at least a bachelor’s degree, although not all compliance jobs require education beyond a high school diploma or GED certificate. Ideal compliance and ethics candidates hold a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or other business-related field. Candidates are certified by organizations like the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association (ECOA). The ECOA offers certifications including the Advanced Professional in Ethics and Compliance (APEC) and the Leading Professional in Ethics of Compliance (LPEC). Continuing education is important as regulations are constantly evolving and changing.
