Safety Inspector Jobs

Safety Inspector Overview

Safety inspectors are responsible for analyzing work environments and developing procedures to help ensure a safe workplace. They are expected to ensure that companies and employees comply with health, safety and environmental codes put in place by city, state and federal governments. Inspectors also work to create policies and programs to encourage physical health, prevent disease and reduce injuries to employees. Part of an inspector's job may include collecting samples, identifying hazards, running safety meetings and conducting regular training on workplace safety. When an accident does occur, safety inspectors often play a role in investigating and determining a cause of an accident as well as suggesting potential changes to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future. Those with the skills required for safety inspector positions may also want to consider careers as quality assurance compliance specialists or regulatory affairs associates.

Safety Inspector Education Requirements

Generally, safety inspectors must have at least a bachelor?s degree, with those holding advanced degrees and certifications maintaining an advantage over other applicants. Ideal safety inspector candidates hold a bachelor?s degree in subjects such as occupational health and safety or in fields related to the industry served, such as engineering, nursing or chemistry. Some positions may require advanced degrees in subjects like health physics or industrial hygiene. Classes specific to a proposed specialty, such as radiation science for nuclear safety inspectors, are recommended for those entering higher risk fields.
