Fashion Visual Merchandising Overview

Fashion visual merchandising jobs let workers find ways to grab the attention of shoppers. These are the men and women who create displays on showroom floors and in windows. They highlight the newest fashions for the season and look for ways to display those fashions in unique and flattering ways. Some fashion merchandisers work at trade shows and specialty shows, displaying products in a flattering way that catches the attention of others in the area. Some positions also require that workers evaluate the current trends and determine what will sell best in a store. After working as a fashion visual merchandiser, workers can seek employment as merchandise coordinators, merchandise managers or merchandise buyers.

Fashion Visual Merchandising Education Requirements

A small number of visual merchandisers have a high school diploma and some college experience, but the majority of workers have at least a bachelor's degree. Workers must posses customer service and design skills. They need to know how to promote the top clothing and how to showcase less popular clothing to increase sales. Workers often spend long hours sketching out new designs and trying different methods before finding something that works. Other skills needed for the job include critical thinking, decision making, organization and time management.

Statistics show that the number of available jobs in the field will increase by 10 percent by 2022, resulting in an additional 3,610 jobs becoming available across the country.

Fashion visual merchandisers are generally employed by clothing and accessories stores. Workers report earning an average wage of $7 to $20 per hour. The median national salary of those working in the field is $35,000 a year.
