A store keeper’s exact duties vary based on the size of the company he or she works for. However, they typically involve administrative tasks related to the day-to-day operation of the store. Store keepers at small businesses might be in charge of bookkeeping, hiring and more, and those who work for a franchise tend to have more limited duties due to franchise policies.

Store Keeper Education Requirements

To be hired, prospective store keepers are only are required to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. However, previous work experience in retail and administrative positions is required; in addition, an understanding of that particular store’s administrative practices is helpful. Store keepers are required to have excellent social skills. A large part of their duties involves interacting with employees, assigning staffing changes, and hiring and firing.

Store Keeper Job Market

The store keeper job market is projected to grow by around 12 percent between 2012 and 2022. This is close to the average growth projection for most industries. The number of jobs expected to open annually is about 50,800. Due to the upward mobility of the position, large numbers of jobs are consistently opening. This provides ample opportunities for employees in lower positions to move up the ladder. In addition, small mom-and-pop shops are constantly in need of reliable store keepers to take the stress of day-to-day operations off of the owners.

Store Keeper Salary

Store keepers make a salary ranging from $17 per hour on the low end to as high as 28$ an hour. Some yearly salaries can reach as high as $81,000 depending on the place of employment. For store keepers, larger companies usually pay higher salaries. Smaller stores do not often generate enough sales to warrant a highly paid store keeper.
