Retail Job Overview


When someone says they work in retail, it usually means they work as a cashier or sales associate. They are responsible for greeting customers, helping them find various items in the store, and assisting them in making their purchases by accepting their payment of cash, credit card, check or gift card when they have completed their shopping. Becoming a Retail Sales Associate or Customer Service Representative is usually a starting position for people entering the workforce for the first time.

Retail Education Requirements


Retail sales associates are able to work even without a high school diploma, which is why it is commonly a part-time job for students. Many people keep the job even after obtaining a high school diploma or a college degree as the work schedule tends to be flexible. Retail sales associates should have good interpersonal skills, have a comprehensive knowledge of the company they work for and be able to spend hours on their feet.

Retail Job Market


The availability of retail jobs is expected to grow by 10 percent by 2022, resulting in 195,570 new jobs per year. Those seeking a job in a retail environment need only look as far as the nearest shopping center; almost every retail company employs retail workers in order to keep the store stocked and to sell the products.

Retail Salary


Retail usually pays only a minimum wage, but this varies from state to state. In many places, this wage is about $7.25 an hour, but some retail jobs can pay as much as $18 an hour. The average annual salary is about $30,000, but some retail workers are also paid on commission, which can earn them a wage of $60,000 or more per year if they are exceptionally skilled and motivated.
