Pharmaceutical Sales Overview


Pharmaceutical sales representatives, sometimes called drug representatives, are in charge of selling new drugs and product samples to physicians. For a drug to make money, a physician must prescribe it, so pharmaceutical sales representatives go from physician to physician and inform them of new treatment options. Usually, pharmaceutical salespeople are employed by a specific drug company or group of companies that produce medicines for certain ailments. Pharmaceutical sales representatives are often highly trained and are more often than not paid on commission. Similar sales jobs include positions such as Pharmaceutical Representatives.

Pharmaceutical Sales Educational Requirements


Usually, a minimum of a bachelor's degree is required to become a pharmaceutical sales representative. Because many pharmaceutical salespeople operate within a specific area of medicine, the company they work for will provide extensive training relating to the specific product they sell. However, pharmaceutical salespeople must also be aware of developments in their field, which requires curiosity and an eagerness to learn. The ability to easily converse with others and a persuasive personality are also important.

Pharmaceutical Sales Job Market


There are a high number of jobs available for pharmaceutical salespeople. With roughly 382,300 currently employed across the United States, the number is projected to grow by 10 percent by 2022 to a total of 418,500. Pharmaceutical sales is a secure job market as medicine is one of a select few products that will always be needed; as a result, the men and women in charge of informing doctors and selling the product will also be needed.

Pharmaceutical Sales Salary


Most pharmaceutical salespeople are paid a base salary plus commission, so the more effective they are at their job, the more they make. The median pay is around $60,500 per year but can range as high as $120,000 or more. The amount of base pay a pharmaceutical salesperson receives is determined by the company he or she works for.
