Route Sales Overview
Transporting goods to customers is just a small portion of what a Route Sales position entails. Route Sales representatives are also expected to stock goods, collect payment and take orders. The position requires exceptional interpersonal skills as route drivers are often the face of a company. They should be comfortable with and able to handle any customer complaints or issues. Sales skills are a plus for this position because some companies may require their representatives to up-sell or add on additional products or services. People employed in Route Sales are often encouraged to seek new business by calling on companies along the routes in which they service. Strong organizational skills are needed because salespeople are required to keep track of new orders and deliveries, including payments rendered. In addition, those employed in Route Sales may find their jobs physically demanding as they are often required to lift and carry heavy items.
Route Sales Education Requirements
Although some companies might require a bachelor's degree for this position, many only call for a high school diploma or its equivalent. Route Sales is excellent for those who wish to embark on a new career as many companies provide on-the-job training. Candidates for positions must have valid driver's licenses and clean driving records. Knowledge of computer software is a plus because many companies use handheld barcode scanners to track inventory. Some drivers find GPS software helpful as they plan their routes. Some Route Sales employees are expected to have a minimal understanding of automobile mechanics if their companies expect them to maintain their delivery vehicles.
