Sales Representative Overview


Sales Representatives are the marketers of the business world. Tasked with selling goods and services both to other businesses and to individual consumers, sales representatives are heavily relied upon to generate income for the company they work for. Sales representatives range from door-to-door insurance salesmen to pharmaceutical representatives marketing a new drug for a biotech company. Products ranging from software to soft drinks require sales representatives to market them, selling either the product itself or the rights to sell to another company.

Sales Representative Educational Requirements


While there are generally no formal educational requirements to be a sales representative, a high school diploma helps. College degrees are also useful. Depending upon the field, some companies may require their sales representatives have higher education, especially in the areas of pharmaceutical sales. A love of travel is helpful because much of a sales representative's job is traveling from place to place. All candidates should be comfortable speaking with people, enthusiastic and persuasive.

Sales Representative Job Market


Sales representatives are needed more during times of economic upswing than during times of recession. When more people are willing to spend money, jobs open up for sales representatives. Even so, the ability to be an effective salesperson is rare, and if someone exhibits that skill, they are likely to find a job relatively easily. Estimates state that the number of sales representative jobs will grow about 9 percent within the next 10 years as the global economy improves. Sales Representative Salary


It is difficult to pinpoint the exact amount that sales representatives make as it varies widely across the board. Many sales representatives work by commission and, thus, make money based on how much they sell. Others are paid a salary plus bonuses. The average salary ranges from $23,000 per year to upwards of $80,000 per year. The actual amount someone makes depends on the company they work for, how effective they are at their job and other factors.
