Territory Sales Manager Overview


Territory Sales Managers are professionals who concentrate on increasing sales within a certain territory or geographical region. Almost all industries employ Territory Sales Managers, from telecommunications to consumer products and food. The key function of managers in this position is to develop relationships with customers in order to meet sales goals. Therefore, it is essential that they have good communication skills and be persuasive leaders. Territory Sales Managers are also responsible for leading their teams in meeting quarterly sales goals and projections.

Territory Sales Manager Education Requirements


Most Territory Sales Managers have a bachelor’s degree and experience working as a sales representative. However, some individuals may work their way up to their positions with nothing more than a high school diploma and considerable experience in the field. Generally, though, ideal candidates for positions as Territory Sales Managers have taken courses in business management, law, finance, accounting, economics, mathematics, marketing, and statistics and have at least one to five years of experience in sales. Territory Sales Managers must also have good analytical skills since they must be able to analyze information and make management decisions.

Territory Sales Manager Job Market


The job market for Territory Sales Managers is projected to grow at a rate of approximately 8 percent from 2012 to 2022, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations. The main factor that will affect the number of available Territory Sales Manager jobs is the growth of the industries they work in. However, because of the increase in online shopping, the number of Territory Sales Managers who will be needed in business-to-consumer sales isn’t likely to be as high as the number needed for business-to-business sales.
