Geologist Jobs

Geologist Overview

A Geologist studies patterns in the Earth as well as the natural processes that created them. The specific area of study can vary wildly as many different sub fields exist within geology. Many work in research positions, while others might work alongside oil and natural resource companies to find the best places to drill.

Geologist Education Requirements

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in geophysical engineering, mining, or geoenvironmental engineering is required to become a geologist. Many geologists choose to further their education and obtain masters and doctoral degrees. Geologists should be skilled with computers and technical equipment. In addition, they should possess strong interpersonal and team skills in order to work the rest of the researchers assigned to the projects. Geologists should also possess good writing skills to fill out grants and file reports.

Geologist Job Market

The job availability for Geologists is expected to grow by 12 percent by 2022, resulting in 300 new jobs each year. Due to the high educational requirements, Geology is a field that few people pursue, which results in there being less competition for highly qualified applicants. Demonstrating an aptitude and interest for the areas of study can greatly increase a person’s chances of finding gainful employment. Many Geologists who search for work away from the research fields find themselves employed by major gas companies.

Geologist Salary

Geologists are paid quite well, with an average salary of $98,000. The wage can vary between employers and tasks. Geologists involved in research often do not make as those that work for corporations. However, Geologists employed by large corporations can make as much as $183,000. A Geologist’s experience can be a large determining factor in both employment and salary.
