Laboratory animal caretakers are responsible for the care and well-being of animals in clinics and laboratories. Perfect for someone who loves animals, a laboratory animal caretaker’s duties will typically be to clean, feed, and walk the animals, clean the cages, care for the animals after procedures, and other related tasks. Laboratory animal caretakers are needed in veterinary offices, at scientific research labs, and at universities.

Laboratory Animal Caretakers Education Requirements

Most laboratory animal caretakers have a high school diploma although quite a few later go on to obtain associate and bachelor’s degrees, often in a field like biology or veterinary medicine. Laboratory animal caretakers are expected to have strong mathematical skills, the ability to spend long hours on their feet, and a genuine concern for animals. Skill in using needles and other medical tools is also beneficial. In addition, strong communication skills may be required for working alongside doctors and other lab technicians.
