Radiology Technologist Jobs
Radiology Technologist Overview
Radiology technologists are responsible for performing diagnostic imaging exams on patients in various settings ranging from small mobile clinics to large hospitals. Technologists perform intakes of patients, assembling their medical history and answering any questions they may have about the imaging procedure. They are expected to follow specific instructions from physicians on what areas to image as well as to guide patients through the imaging process safely and comfortably. Radiology technologists not only operate imaging equipment proficiently, but they also have a firm understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. They oftentimes have to maintain and adjust imaging equipment as needed to ensure that it works accurately and efficiently. Technologists may also confer with physicians on the results of imaging tests and work together to determine whether additional images are required. Those interested in medical imaging may also want to consider a career as a Medical Sonographer.
Radiology Technologist Education Requirements
Radiology technologist jobs involve both education and certification requirements. Typically, candidates complete an accredited associate degree program through a community college or trade school. Program accreditation is performed through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. To remain more competitive for open positions, candidates may also continue education through a bachelor's degree program or graduate certificates. Certification requirements vary by state. In general, certification requires passing an examination, either directly through the state practiced in or through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
