Gathers and safeguards physical evidence for laboratory analysis by collecting impressions, such as, fingerprints, tool marks, footwear, fabric impressions, tire patterns, and bite marks; collecting and packaging forensic biology, such as blood, semen, body fluids, hair, nail scrapings, blood stain patterns; gathering trace evidence, including gun shot residues, arson accelerants, paint, glass, and fibers; seizing firearms, including weapons, gun powder patterns, casings, projectiles, fragments, pellets, wadding, and cartridges.

Restricts access and prevents evidence destruction at crime scenes by identifying, isolating, and securing the scene, using some type of rope or barrier; defining and restricting the outer perimeter to keep onlookers and nonessential personal away from the scene; defining an inner perimeter for a command post; determining the core, or scene itself.
