Criminal Justice Jobs

Criminal Justice Job Overview

The field of criminal justice encompasses a variety of different job opportunities, such as Lawyers, Police Officers, Government Agents, Forensic Investigators, Teachers, Correctional Officers and more. There are criminals throughout the country, which means that these professionals are necessary in every city and state. As technology continues to advance, crimes become harder to trace and solve, so those who want to work in criminal justice will continue to learn throughout their careers.

The daily tasks of a person working in a criminal justice job will depend on what he or she is doing, whether it involves working directly with suspects or convicts or doing more work behind the scenes to find and process evidence.

Criminal Justice Job Education Requirements

The educational requirements for careers in criminal justice also vary depending on the type of work. For police officers and correctional officers, most jobs only require a high school diploma along with training and education at a police academy. Forensic specialists typically need a bachelor's degree in the field, while a lawyer needs a master's degree to receive qualification to practice. Many positions offer training while on the job, so employees in this field have the potential to move up and learn more about criminal justice.

Criminal Justice Job Market

According to recent statistics, lawyers seem to be in excess, while police officers and other law enforcement forces have dwindling numbers. Since there are so many different job opportunities within the field of criminal justice, it is difficult to say whether there is predicted growth and opportunity in each area, but since there will always be individuals who are breaking laws, there will always be a need for criminal justice officials.

Criminal Justice Job Salary Information

Depending on the criminal justice job, salary can vary quite drastically. Education plays a role, so jobs that require higher education have much higher starting salaries. For example, a criminal justice professor can earn close to $100,000 per year, while a police officer or correctional officer typically earns between $27,000 and $69,000 each year.

Another area of criminal justice that can offer a more lucrative paycheck is working for government agencies, such as the CIA, FBI, DEA, or others. Since working in the field carries a higher risk of danger to each employee, he or she may qualify for hazard pay or other additional payment amounts to compensate.
