Criminal Justice Jobs

Criminal Justice Jobs Overview

In a criminal justice job, you’ll enforce the law; protect people and property; and investigate possible crimes for local, state or federal government.

Criminal Justice Job Types

Uniformed police officers respond to calls from the public and patrol a defined area looking for crimes and criminals. Police officer jobs sometimes focus on a particular crime (narcotics, gangs), a specialized skill (motorcycle, SWAT) or a particular geography (a campus or transit system).

State troopers do much the same work as police officers, but they focus on patrolling state highways and helping smaller police organizations.

Transit and railroad police careers focus on protecting railroad yards and transit stations.

Sheriffs and deputy sheriffs work mostly for counties, operate jails and serve court systems.

Detectives and criminal investigators collect evidence of crimes by conducting interviews, raids, records examinations and stakeouts.

Fish and game wardens work on public lands where they enforce boating, hunting and fishing rules and do search and rescue.

Criminal justice job opportunities also exist at federal law-enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the US Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security.

Criminal Justice Education

At a minimum, a criminal justice career requires a high school diploma. To land many jobs in criminal justice you’ll first need to earn a college degree then graduate from a training academy.

Criminal Justice Job Market

If you aspire to criminal justice work, local police officer is the easiest position to land. That’s because local departments have the highest turnover due to lower salaries. However, when local budgets are tight, police jobs can decrease.

Jobs in state and federal agencies are more competitive because they often pay more and offer more advancement opportunities.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts police and detective jobs will increase by 7 percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than average for all jobs.

Criminal Justice Salaries

The BLS says median salaries for criminal justice jobs in 2011 were:

  • Detectives and criminal investigators: $71,770
  • Transit and railroad police: $56,390
  • Police and sheriff’s patrol officers: $54,230
  • Fish and game wardens: $50,070
