Intelligence Analyst Job Overview

Intelligence analysts work in the government and both private and public companies around the world. They strive to secure the privacy and security of crucial, private, or otherwise protected information. The most common work duties of someone who works as a security intelligence analyst may include:

  • Gathering information on a perceived threat
  • Organizing information on how to thwart a threat
  • Monitoring the everyday practices within a company or organization
  • Interviewing people to find solutions
  • Conducting analysis of a vast variety of documents
  • Formulating theories regarding why specific problems persist
  • Developing doable solutions based on theories
  • Determining equipment that may be needed for optimal security
  • Sharing data and other expertise with others
  • Monitoring and assessing ongoing developments within a company or organization
  • Participating in group meetings
  • Writing oral assessments of specific events
  • Speaking one-on-one with supervisor or other authority regarding findings and plans

Security intelligence analyst job candidates who enjoy teamwork and also have strong leadership skills will likely thrive in this positions. Intelligence analysts should also have strong interpersonal and analytical skills in order to succeed in this job.

Intelligence Analyst Job Education Requirements

Most intelligence analyst positions require that applicants hold at least a bachelor’s degree, and many of them also have more strict requirements. For example, some positions require that candidates hold at least a Master of Library Sciences or a Master of Business Administration, depending on the company’s needs and goals of the particular position. Courses that aspiring intelligence analysts should take in school include psychology, computer science, government, information science, accounting, and economics. Those who are considering this position may also enjoy investigator jobs and IT security team manager jobs.

Intelligence Analyst Job Market

While the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not provide specific information on intelligence analysts in security, there does appear to be great promise for job growth within this field. For example, in 2008, the director of the FBI did report that there had been a recent surge in need for intelligence analysts, and the need is likely to continue to grow along with the need for other security jobs. Candidates who earn at least a master’s degree in their desired specialty will be in the best position to win the best entry level positions, an on-the-job training and work experience can help intelligence analysts achieve their long-term goals.

Intelligence Analyst Job Salary Information

Intelligence analysts earn a wide variety of salaries. On the whole, intelligence analysts earn an average annual income of approximately $62,000, but this can fluctuate greatly depending on the city where on is employed, the employer, and the experience and education of the worker. Those who hold only a bachelor’s degree may earn significantly lower salaries, while those with higher education and experience can expect to earn the top salaries in the field in big cities where they are in demand.
