Police Jobs OverviewUniformed and undercover police officers keep people and property safe from harm by enforcing laws, patrolling areas, responding to emergency and non-emergency situations and making arrests when necessary. In addition, they may:
- Conduct traffic stops during times of the year when people are more likely to drive under the influence, such as during the holiday season
- Go through the process of obtaining warrants
- Write reports to document specific happenings
- Testify in court
- Work at community events to help the public have favorable perceptions of law enforcement personnel
- Gather and preserve evidence
Police Job Education RequirementsAt minimum, police applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and graduate from their employer's training academy. Additionally, some police departments require a college degree, or at least some college level coursework. If a person desires to work for the federal government or in certain places where other languages besides English are commonly spoken, having a background in a foreign language can be very beneficial.
After gaining experience on the job, people may be eligible to become police lieutenants and police chiefs, or they might be given the option to specialize in a certain type of work such as taking a job as a transit and railway police officer to keep subway routes and trains safe.
Police Job MarketFrom now through 2022, the job market is expected to grow five percent. Although that is slower than the average compared with other occupations, people who help themselves stand out from other applicants by learning additional languages, serving in the military and going to college should find ideal job opportunities. The same is true for people searching for careers who already have related on-the-job experience.
Because public safety is a constant desire, there will always be a need for police officers. However, the job opportunities available can fluctuate, specifically because the ability to hire more officers is based on the amount of government funding available.
Police Job Salary InformationIn the spring of 2012, the median yearly wage for police officers was $56,980. In addition to the pay, many police officers enjoy benefits, such as a uniform allowance, good health insurance and the ability to retire from the workforce earlier than usual.
