Crane Operator Education Requirements

Generally, crane operators must have a high school diploma or GED certificate. In rare cases, a company may hire an individual without these qualifications. Certification and licensing is required in most states to operate a crane. To prepare for certification, operators often complete an apprenticeship program. These programs combine on-the-job training with classroom learning. Several trade and vocational schools also offer training programs to help potential operators prepare for certification tests. To qualify to take the certification exams, prospects must be at least 18 years of age and in good health. These exams include both a written test and a practical examination. The results of the practical exam are due within 12 months of the successful completion of the written exam.
