Sustainable Tourism Jobs

Sustainable Tourism Overview

Sustainable tourism, which may also be referred to as ecotourism, relates to pleasure travel that leaves as minimal impact on the local culture and environment as possible. Because there continues to be a desire for individuals and families alike to travel and because there is a growing concern about the state of the environment, sustainable tourism is increasingly popular. There are many positions that individuals may work in within the sustainable tourism industry, including a tour guide, a travel agent and others.

Sustainable Tourism Professionals Requirements

There is an extensive range of positions that individuals may work in within the sustainable tourism industry. The various positions each have unique educational requirements and skills requirements. For example, a tour guide in the sustainable tourism industry may only need to demonstrate knowledge of the location where tours will be conducted. On the other hand, an executive in a sustainable tourism travel agency may need a bachelor’s degree in business or a more advanced degree. These individuals often must demonstrate a special interest in or passion about travel in general or about the location where the job is located. In addition, many of these positions require the employee to interact directly with travelers, so they may need to have excellent people skills, communication skills or sales skills.

Sustainable Tourism Job Market

Sustainable tourism, or responsible tourism, is still a rapidly growing market. The private sector is well-established in developed nations, but demand is creating new positions in these markets. In undeveloped nations, the sustainable tourism industry is still expanding. Furthermore, governments and private organizations are also driving demand in these positions. Tourism is, however, tied to the state of the economy. Generally, those who work in a sustainable tourism position may enjoy job security with numerous opportunities located in areas around the world.

Sustainable Tourism Salary

Your earning potential with a career in sustainable tourism can vary greatly based on the location of the job and the type of position you hold. Tour guides, for example, may earn between $20,000 to $30,000 per year while business executives and sales staff may earn $50,000 or more per year.
