Desktop Support Analyst Job Overview


A Desktop Support Analyst, also known as a computer support technician, provides on-site or virtual technical support services for clients and employees in business environments. Desktop Support Analysts provide hands-on hardware support, such as connecting computers to the wired network. Individuals in this position also install software, updates and upgrades on the computers and workstations on the network. Desktop Support Analysts may configure new computers, reconfigure and re-purpose older machines and set up workstations for new employees.

Desktop Support Analysts provide Help Desk support over the phone through chat services or via remote desktop support applications as well as in person. The Desktop Support Analyst position can require entry level or advanced level skills based on the tier level of support required for the enterprise. Desktop Support Analysts may also be known as computer support specialists, user support analysts and support technicians.

Desktop Support Analyst Educational Requirements


Though a four-year degree is generally not required to become a Desktop Support Analyst, some college is recommended. Certifications, such as CompTIA A+, show employers that the candidate has demonstrated a knowledge of the tasks required for the job.

Desktop Support Analyst Jobs Outlook


Though desktops are largely being replaced by mobile devices, laptops and tablets in the enterprise, the daily tasks of Support Technicians tend to evolve with the organization's needs. Support Technicians should be prepared to expand their skills to include support of mobile devices. Desktop and computer support jobs are expected to increase at a faster rate than other professions and careers; the need for Support Specialists is expected to increase by 17 percent through 2022. The median salary for a Desktop Support Analyst is about $47,000 per year. A typical analyst's salary ranges from approximately $32,000 to $63,000 annually. Desktop Support positions may also pay an hourly rate when specialized staffing agencies hire support analysts to fulfill on-site client contracts.
