Gis Jobs

GIS Job Overview

GIS stands for Geographic Information System. GIS implements a strategy of using computer hardware, software and networks to root data about a place to its actual geographic coordinates. This data can then be accessed and analyzed. GIS is used by governments, scientists, utility companies, educators and many others.

There are several different careers that revolve around GIS. Three of these are the GIS Specialist, GIS Analyst and GIS Manager. A GIS Specialist translates the data about a location into a format that can be read by a Geographic Information System. A GIS Analyst is the one who interprets that data for a practical use. A GIS Manager works in a managerial capacity over others that use or create this data.

GIS Job Education Requirements

It is highly recommended that all individuals seeking GIS jobs obtain a college degree. Subjects that should be studied include computer programming, geography and computer engineering. GIS certificate programs are available from many universities. While obtaining one is a good idea, many employers also expect applicants to have an associate or bachelor’s degree. An internship is a good way to break into this field.
