Help Desk Support Overview


Help desk support people are in charge of troubleshooting and diagnosing issues with electronics and computer systems. Usually part of the user services department, a help desk support person assists those who are not familiar with computer systems in the proper operation of their machine by diagnosing and repairing any technical problems that may arise. Help desk support people are also often called in to perform installations or in-office repairs. Similar technology jobs include positions such as Help Desk Specialists.

Help Desk Support Educational Requirements


The majority of help desk support people do not possess a degree but do have some amount of college education. Moderate on-the-job training is usually provided, particularly if there are specialized systems involved; however, a working knowledge of computers and technology, as well as the ability to discover and correct the source of the problem independently, is highly valued. In addition, a large amount of patience is also a plus because many help desk support people find themselves in an education role, teaching less computer-literate individuals how to use their machines and prevent future errors.

Help Desk Support Job Market


The job market for help desk support jobs is strong. Despite the nation's technological climate, a large number of people are not aware of the proper procedures for correcting computer errors. There are 547,700 currently employed help desk support people, a number that is projected to grow 20 percent by 2022 to a total of 658,500. Help desk support people find themselves employed at many corporate offices as well as in education facilities such as schools and universities.

Help Desk Support Salary


The range of income for help desk support people varies widely based on employer. Those employed by universities will not make as much as those who work for corporate companies. Hourly wages can range from $10 to $30 while yearly salaries can be as low as $25,000 and as high as $72,000. Pay can be negotiated based on the amount of experience a support person possesses.
