Radiologic Technologist Job Overview

Radiologic technologists work in diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, doctors' offices, medical centers, and outpatient care centers all across the country. They perform x-rays and other diagnostic imaging examinations on patients of all ages and of all level of abilities. The most common job duties of a radiologic technologist may include:

  • Preparing patients for x-rays and other procedures
  • Maintaining exam rooms where x-rays are taken
  • Stocking and re-stocking radiologic supplies and other medical supplies
  • Taking x-rays and other diagnostic imaging examinations
  • Making sure that equipment is in stellar condition so that it operates well
  • Processing paperwork and medical records
  • Developing radiologic film according to on-site protocol
  • Adhering to strict confidentiality standards
  • Assisting with other clinical procedures as needed

Candidates who are detail-oriented will have a big advantage in this field. It’s important for radiologic technologists to have great people skills, and they need to be able to remain calm under pressure from both physicians and patients. They also need to hone their technical and math skills as well as maintain a lot of physical stamina for the demanding work that radiologic technologists do.

Radiologic Technologist Job Education Requirements

Most aspiring radiologic technologists earn at least an associate’s degree. The undergraduate programs should include both classroom studies and hands-on clinical work under supervision. Candidates who want to move up or be prepared to stand out for the most competitive jobs should pursue a bachelor’s degree in radiography. Other jobs in technology include engineering aide jobs and process technician jobs.

Radiologic Technologist Job Market

There are currently nearly 200,000 Americans working as radiologic technologists. There is a projected growth of 21 percent in radiologic technologist jobs by 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That means that there will be more than 240,000 radiologic technologist jobs in 2022. That rate of job growth is significantly more than most other occupations will have. Because of the growing aging population and the increase in the number of people who will have health insurance available to them, that will likely mean that there will be more of a demand for radiologic technologists.

Radiologic Technologist Job Salary Information

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for radiologic technologists is $54,620. Those who are on the high end of the earning spectrum make an approximate salary of $77,160 per year while the lower-earning radiologic technologists earn less than $37,060 per year. Candidates who acquire multiple certifications will be best able to command the higher-paying radiologic technologist jobs.
