Software Engineer Jobs
Software Engineer Job Overview
Software engineers are responsible for developing and designing computer applications and computer systems for clients or large corporations. Due to most of the work being done on computers, a perk of this job is the ability to telecommute or work from home. Other non-computer parts of the job are meeting with clients to determine the needs of the company and traveling to a location to develop software applications.
Daily tasks for a software engineer include:
- Modifying or updating current software to improve systems or correct errors
- Designing and developing software systems
- Consulting with clients to determine a schedule for system improvement and maintenance
- Training users on new or modified systems or equipment
- Storing, retrieving, and manipulating data for analysis of system efficiency
Those that excel at this position could eventually become a senior systems software engineer, which manages and monitors a group of software engineers.
Software Engineer Job Education Requirements
All software engineering jobs require at least a bachelor's degree in a technology-related field such as computer science, information technology or software engineering. However, candidates need additional skills outside of the classroom, such as strong computer networking and programming skills.
Certifications and continual training are vital to the software engineering field due to the constant change and improvements made in computer technology. Many software vendors and universities offer additional training. Certifications are typically obtained through the Institute for Certification of Computer Professionals. This certification requires examinations and membership maintenance through additional testing.
Due to the market being highly competitive, many candidates eventually earn a master's degree in computer science. This qualifies candidates for upper management positions such as a chief information technology officer.
Software Engineer Job Market
The job market for software engineers is expected to grow by 22 percent over the next 10 years, which is nearly double the growth rate for all other occupations. Constant updates and new software fuel the demand for software engineers as well. Currently, there are 1,018,000 software engineers nationwide, with about 222,000 new jobs available in the coming years.
