Satellite Communications Technician Overview


Satellite Communications Technicians spend their days testing and repairing satellite communication equipment to ensure that the units are working at peak efficiency and meet the specifications required of the equipment. The satellite equipment can belong to the government or private business firms. Day-to-day duties include making adjustments to data and audio levels, repairing any faulty parts and diagnosing equipment malfunctions of the components. Additionally, technicians' responsibilities include preventative maintenance and installation of new hardware and equipment. They have an understanding of the hardware’s capabilities and limitations. Keeping this delicate communications equipment working properly is their main function. These technicians tend to work full-time with overtime occasionally required. While many technicians work during regular business hours, there are instances when immediate repairs are required outside of those hours.

Satellite Communications Technician Education Requirements


Generally companies are looking for Satellite Communications Technicians who have a technical school degree in the field or who possess an associate degree in satellite communication with at least five years of experience. Some employers require at least a bachelor's degree and provide on-the-job training. If the company does offer on-the-job training, new hires will be paired with an experienced technician who will help to teach the basic tasks of setting up and troubleshooting satellite communication equipment.

As the electronics industry expands and creates new devices dependent upon satellite communication, this field is expected to grow at a rapid rate. The job market for Satellite Communications Technicians is expected to grow by 30 percent in the coming years, well above the national average for all occupations.
