Telecommunications Technician Overview


Also known as Telecom Technicians, Telecommunications Technicians install, maintain and repair equipment that has access to the Internet, is connected to telephone lines or carries communications signals. Their job generally entails a wide array of tasks such as rearranging dialing equipment, inspecting wiring, repairing malfunctioning equipment, adjusting equipment settings for enhanced performance and using diagnostic equipment to identify problems. In addition, they demonstrate and explain how equipment works to customers like private homeowners and businesses. Telecommunications Technicians need to have good communication skills to service both business and residential customers. Telecom Technicians are also required to keep records on installations, repairs and maintenance visits.

Telecommunications Technician Education Requirements


A certificate or associate degree in computer science or electronics is required to become a Telecommunications Technician. Aspiring Telecom Technicians can obtain the required education at a technical school or community college. In addition, there are organizations like the Society of Telecommunications Engineers and the Telecommunications Industry Association that offer specific certifications for this title. After hire, most companies provide on-the-job training for new employees to learn about the technology and procedures for specific installations and repairs. During training, most new hires work under an experienced technician along with attending workshops.

Telecommunications Technician Job Market


According to statistics, the industry growth for Telecom Technicians is projected to increase by 4 percent through 2022. Job opportunities will be with wired telecommunications carriers, cable, subscription programming and building equipment contractors. Most Telecommunications Technicians work full time including weekends, holidays and evenings. Some are even on-call for emergencies. Similar jobs in the telecommunications industry include Telecommunications Analyst and Telecommunications Coordinator.

Statistics indicate the average wage for these professionals is $54,000 a year. The lower 10 percent earn $30,000. The upper 10 percent earn more than $70,000.
