Courier Jobs Overview
Courier as a job title encompasses a variety of positions that all have elements relating to logistics in industries and sectors such as medicine and health care, education, and government services. Couriers often enjoy considerable flexibility and self-direction as well as a working environment where they may not be required to engage directly or frequently with the public; they deliver supplies to contacts at businesses, hospitals, government agencies and other vendors of services. Workers occupying this position follow precise procedures for handling cargo, especially when delivering medical products.
Courier Job Education Requirements and Qualifications
Most courier or delivery driver positions require little more than a high school diploma or GED. Important qualifications may include possession of a valid driver's license, a safe driving record and vehicle insurance. Some positions may also wish for applicants to have a good criminal record with the ability to pass a background check or other pre-employment screening. Previous courier or delivery experience is highly desirable as well. Some positions may require the ability to lift a certain amount of weight, usually 50 or 55 pounds. For medical couriers, this may not be the case. These requirements will vary depending on the specific position and employer; however, an applicant's driving record and license will be essential factors for success in being hired as a courier.
Courier Job Market
The current market trend for couriers indicates that this occupation will experience a mild decline between now and 2020. This slightly downward prediction is less pronounced for those who specialize in local express delivery. Similar positions include Local Delivery Driver jobs.
