Transportation Dispatcher Job OverviewTransportation Dispatchers maintain order within a company. They work for trucking companies, long haul freight companies, railroads and other types of businesses. They use radios, computers and phones to keep track of the location of drivers and cargo all around the world, and they use those same products to keep customers informed of their shipments. Transportation Dispatchers are also responsible for providing operators with emergency services when needed. If a driver calls in with a broken carburetor or a flat tire, the dispatcher will contact help in the area and notify the driver of when help will arrive.
Transportation Dispatcher Job Education RequirementsUnlike other Transportation Dispatchers, Emergency Service Dispatchers who are responsible for sending fire trucks and police to the scene of crimes, need certification. They can obtain certification after going through on-the-job training and passing an examination. Those working in the transportation industry typically need a high school diploma or a GED to gain employment. They also need to remain up to date on new technologies and understand how those technologies work. Most companies look for dispatchers with a friendly demeanor and those capable of working long hours with little to no supervision.
Transportation Dispatcher Job MarketThe largest percentage of Transportation Dispatcher positions are available from freight and trucking companies, but dispatchers may also find work through building contractors, the local government, or taxi and limousine companies. It's likely that the number of dispatcher jobs will increase at a similar rate in the future. The states with the highest number of transportation dispatchers include California, Texas and New York, but most states in the country need dependable dispatchers.
