Over the Road Truck Driver Overview


Over the road truck drivers are responsible for transporting goods across all 50 states and into Canada and Mexico. They are a vital part of the supply chain and are often called upon to be away from home for days or weeks at a time in order to deliver goods to locations that may be several states away. OTR truck drivers are responsible for maintaining mileage logs, complying with local and federal regulations governing the industry, and maintaining the safety and performance of their vehicles. Over the road truck drivers work irregular hours based on guidelines set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Over the Road Truck Driver Requirements


OTR truck driving jobs do not have a minimum education requirement; however, many post-secondary truck driving schools require applicants to have a high school diploma or GED. Over the road truck driving jobs do require applicants to obtain a commercial driver's license, have a clean driving record and have no prior convictions for driving under the influence. In order to earn a position, applicants must be able to pass a physical examination that demonstrates their ability to withstand the physical demands of the job.

The outlook for new OTR truck drivers entering the workforce is positive. According to statistics, the demand for over the road truck drivers is estimated to increase by 11 percent over the next 10 years. In 2012, there were an estimated 1,701,500 people employed as OTR truck drivers, and opportunities exist across all 50 states. Similar positions include Nationwide Truck Driver jobs.

The median salary for OTR truck driver jobs in the United States is $38,200. Over the road truck drivers who have experience and work for larger employers tend to earn higher salaries and receive better benefits than those working for smaller carriers. OTR truck driving jobs pay by the mile rather than an hourly or weekly salary, so those who opt for less home time tend to earn more than those who choose more regular hours.
