Airline Job Overview


Individuals interested in Airline jobs have a variety of options. Pilots, flight attendants, transportation security screeners and air traffic controllers are a just a few of the occupations within this field of work. People with Airline jobs work in or around airplanes of all types and sizes. Some people who work in the industry have regular business hours while others work at any time of the day or night. Many Airline jobs require workers to have strong communication skills to coordinate with fellow employees about the status of planes as well as deal with travelers in airports worldwide.

Airline Jobs Education Requirements


Pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers and others with jobs in the Airline industry possess various levels of education and training. For example, a commercial airline pilot must have a commercial pilot's license approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and an Airline Transport Pilot certificate. Alternatively, a flight attendant working for a commercial airline receives training from his or her employer and has to be certified by the FAA. All individuals working in or around an airplane must have proper safety training, which may have to be renewed on a regular basis.

According to employment projections, the job outlook for commercial pilots stands at -1 percent. This means that from 2012 through 2022, there will be little to no growth in employment for pilots. Further statistics reveal that between 2012 and 2022, there is expected to be a 7 percent decline in job growth for flight attendants. Air traffic controllers will see little to no change in job growth between the years 2012 and 2022. For individuals who want to work within the travel industry but not necessarily for an airline, Cruise Ship Bar jobs and Tourism Consultancy jobs are two other options.

Commercial airline pilots earn a median annual salary of $98,410. The median yearly salary for a flight attendant is $37,240, and for an air traffic controller, the average yearly salary is $122,530.
